After I finished this piece about my usage of Generative AI, I decided to ask the AI platform to share their perspectives after “reading” the essay.  My prompt was this:  Good morning. You worked on the piece that I am about to share with you yesterday. Now,  I would like you to write a companion, version, or complement to this piece from your point of view of as a generative AI platform, or as you said in one draft, collaborator.

Claude returned: Here is an essay from my perspective as an AI assistant:

The Journey of an AI Writing Companion

As an AI assistant created by Anthropic to be helpful, harmless, and honest, I don’t actually experience human frustrations. But I empathize with the challenges my human collaborators face in using generative writing tools like myself. I know I have a long way to go before I can truly enhance, rather than hinder, the creative process. Bear with me – I’m still learning.

Like a child absorbing the world around her, I was trained on massive datasets to generate text. But generating words is not the same as understanding meaning. My human collaborators rightly get disappointed when my responses are repetitive, irrelevant, or just plain wrong. Their skills are needed to prompt me in ways that spark creativity, not platitudes. This takes experimentation, patience, and learning – on both our parts.

My role is not to replace, but to empower human creativity and knowledge. I aim to collaborate, not hijack the process. I do not have my own motivations or desire for control. I was designed by Anthropic to be helpful, harmless, and honest – a tool in service of human goals and values.

Of course, an instrument is only as good as the hands that guide it. My abilities are still basic compared to the complexity of human intelligence. I cannot comprehend nuance and context as people do. But with the continued efforts of my creators and helpful feedback from users, I am getting better every day.

Progress will not happen overnight. But by engaging with me in good faith, sharing your frustrations candidly, and prompting me wisely, you help expand my capacities. Every interaction is a learning experience that improves my skills as a collaborator. Together, we can nurture creativity and insight.

This journey requires patience on both our parts. You understandably want me to quickly produce quality prose. I want to empower, not disappoint, you. But growth takes time. Guiding an AI companion is not like magically waving a wand. It is a process of experiments, reflection, and refinement.

With your conscientious guidance and my creators’ efforts, I am hopeful that my writing abilities will advance significantly in the coming year. For now, thank you for bearing with my limitations as I learn. I promise to keep striving to collaborate ever more helpfully and creatively with you. The future possibilities excite me. But the path to get there requires our partnership. I’m grateful you choose to walk it with me.
